John William Aldous was the second son born to Caroline Aldous in 1853 in Stepney, Middlesex.
At the time of the Hadfield Padfield 1861 Census (near Glossop), his mother was 34 years old
and worked at a cotton mill as a cotton winder. His older brother George is listed as a sweeper although he was
only nine years old, and John William was eight and went to school, and his younger brother Frederick was five.

In 1878,
John William married Elizabeth (Lizzie Jane born 1856 in Kettering, Northampton) and they had four sons and one daughter; Walter (1880-1957), William (1881-1944), and Wilfred (1882-1944), Harry (1886-1933), Caroline (1892-1894).
By the time of the 1881 British Census, John William Aldous was married to Lizzie and had two sons. They lived with his mother, Caroline. The census says the Aldous family were living on Saltersbrook Road, Tintwistle, Cheshire. On the day of the census, the household included Caroline, Fred (age twenty-five), John W (age twenty-seven), and Elizabeth Aldous (age twenty-five) who was Caroline's daughter-in-law and called Lizzie for short, and their two sons,Walter (eighteen months old) and William (two months old).
John William and Lizzie Jane brought up their children in the Hadfield/Tintwistle area but later John went to live in Beckingham where he looked after the Willow Farm of Fred Aldous I. He died in 1915 but his wife lived on until 1940. |
