Census Information for William and Elizabeth Bustard and Family

* In 1861, the family lived at 21 Hawley Crescent, Camden Town. William's occupation is Journeyman Pianoforte Maker. (This is very much a Bustard occupation. A journeyman is someone who has served an apprenticeship and is a skilled worker who is then able to offer his skill to an employer).

* In 1871, they are living at 9 Crogsland Road, St Pancras. Father and son both pianoforte makers.

* In 1881, William is listed as a widower. They live on Myddleton Road, Hornsey (no number listed) and William is still a Pianoforte Maker. (Frances is listed as paralyzed.)

* In 1901, William Bustard is 66 and a widower and working. His son William Henry Bustard (age 45) is also a widower and is living with him. His daughter Emily Rebecca is single (age 39) and is a housekeeper.

* In 1911, Herbert William Bustard (son of William Henry) is age 27 and is married to Violet Clayton Bustard age 21. They had been married for 2.5 years and have one child age nine months, Stanley King Bustard. They live at 50 Penny Lane, Smithdown Road, Liverpool. The census shows that Herbert William was born in Hornsey in London and living with him is his brother, Horace Meers Bustard, is age 18 and was born in Belfast, Ireland. Ruby King (sister-in-law) is age 18 and is also living with them.

* In 1911, Emily Rebecca Bustard is single (age 49) living at 17 Arthur Street, Moorside, Swinton. She has her "own account" "at home" which is a drapery business & dressmaking. It says she was born in London.

* From research done in 2011 by Eugene Dunphy (music tutor in Belfast, Ireland):
In 1893, William Henry Bustard opened a piano shop with Carl Hardebeck at 22 Wellington Place, Belfast, Ireland, called "Bustard and Hardebeck". The business only lasted three years until 1896 and the business partnership was officially declared bankrupt in 1901. Hardebeck was born in Mydlleton Road, London near to where Bustard lived in 1881. (Thanks to Eugene Dunphy - 2011 - music tutor in Belfast who researched the life and times of the blind Irish music collector, Carl Hardebeck 1869-1945).

Searching the marriage index just now I came across a Frances and John Bustard marrying in 1862 St Pancras. It looks as if they both got married on the same day as the index entries are consecutive. I'm pretty sure these are our Frances and John.

Census 1871: living at 97 Ossulton Street, St Pancras. His occupation: French Polisher.

Three children:
John Edward Walter Williams born 1863 St Pancras.
Frances Mary Ann Williams born 1865 St Pancras.
William Edward Williams born 1867 St Pancras.
(1871 census sheet)

Census 1881: now living at 66 Chalton Street, St Pancras.
Two more children:
Charles Thomas Williams born 1873 St Pancras.
Arthur Ernest Williams born 1878 St Pancras.
(1881 census sheets x2)

Census 1891: now living at 153 Stanhope Street, St Pancras. John now listed as a widower.
(1891 census)

Census 1901: John now living with his son John Edward Walter Williams
at a pub in the High Street, Colnbrook, Langley Marish, Buckinghamshire.
Son John E W married Laura Fuller 1896 Hastings, Sussex.
Their children in 1901 are Frances May Williams born 1898 and Dorothy Emily Williams born 1900.
4. John Bustard
b. 1839/40

m. 1862?
John Bustard who married at the same time as his sister Frances has been difficult to track down.
The four names given by the marriage search are: John Bustard, Philip Thomas Mitchell, Mary Ann Humphrey and Hannah Webb. I did find a Philip Mitchell married to Hannah in the 1881 census and I think it is safe to assume that John married Mary Ann Humphrey. I have found a John Bustard married to a Mary Ann in the 1871 and 1881 census, the age is right but the place of birth is Exeter, Devon not Broadclyst. Had he been a pianoforte maker I would say it was him but his profession is baker (not a family trade). So I'm not sure.

5. James Bustard

m. Selina Maria Hibbard b. 1844 Marylebone

Two children of William Arthur and Bessie:
Violet Bessie born 1897 Paddington
John William born 1898 Hammersmith.

Census 1881: James Bustard is living at the same address, birth place now Devonshire. 5 more children. Daughter Constance is now named Selina.
At the same address is Sophia Edsall listed as mother so she may be Selina's mother but she is not listed in the marriage index under this name. A Sophia Story did marry a Thomas Henry Medow Ludlow Edsall in 1842, Sophia's age is correct so could be the right person but again no proof.

5 more children of James and Selina Bustard:

Albert Edward born 1871 married Eliza Allen in 1899
(1901 census shows Albert married to Eliza with two children from Eliza's previous marriage - Dora Emily Allen was born St Pancras 1895 and an Emily Florence Allen was born St Pancras 1896 - see 1901 census sheet.)

The census says that Selina had 13 children - 8 still living and 5 who had died.

m. Susan Bryant in 1868, St Pancras.
Susan was born 1845 in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.
They had one child Thomas Charles born 1870 in St Pancras. (1871 census)

1881 census sheet (good clear image).

Census 1891 : son Thomas Charles has the occupation of Piano Tuner.

Census 1901: Thomas now listed as an employer rather than employed.
(Thomas Charles not found in the 1901 census, no marriage or death records.)
