Henrietta Hirst & Leopold Linney


Henrietta Hirst was one of five daughters of David and Mary Hirst. She was born in Hadfield, Derbyshire in about 1860. Her sisters were: Alice Ann, Mary Ellen, Rachel and Emma Jane. Her sister, Alice Ann Hirst, married into the Aldous family when she married Frederick Aldous in 1882 at age twenty-five. Henrietta married Leopold Linney.

LEOPOLD LINNEY'S FAMILY:
John and Mary Linney were age 25 in 1841 census and lived in the township of Whitfield. Issac Linney (age 15) lived with them. John worked as a cotton spinner. In 1851, they lived in Glossop and their daughter, Caroline. John was a grocer. John (36) was born in Hayfield , Mary (39) in Chapel-en-le-Frith, and Caroline (6) in Glossop.

John Linney must have remarried. In 1861 Elizabeth (42) and John (46) Linney were living in High Street, Glossop. John Linney was a Master Grocer. The census says that his daughter, Caroline Linney, is 16 years old and worked as a "Pupil Teacher". Elizabeth was born in New Mills, John was born in Hayfield and Caroline was born in Glossop.

There is a 1871 census listing for Elizabeth Linney (50) and her eight-year-old son Leopold H Linney. It says that they were both living at 110 High Street, Glossop and that Leopold was born in Glossop. It says that Leopold's mother was a grocer. They had a lodger, Lee Shaw (41) born in Hayfield and he was working as an iron moulder.

Leopold Linney emigrated to the United States in 1880. He must have only been 18 years old, Henrietta is listed as living with her family in Glossop Dale in the 1881 census.

married Leopold F Linney. Their marriage is listed as taking place in 1882 in Hayfield, Derbyshire. They had at least two sons, John Linney and William Lee Linney (Willie) born in the United States.

In 1881, living at 8 Thomas Street in Glossop, Elizabeth Linney is a widow (age 60) and still has an the lodger, Lee Shaw (52) who is still an iron moulder, as well as lodger Phoebe Shaw (16) who is a "Card Room Hand"

The United States 1900 census records show that Leopold Linney was born in May 1861 in England. He emigrated to the US in 1880. It says that in 1900 he had been married for 18 years to Henrietta, The marriage date is listed as 1882. His residence is listed as: "Precinct 20-23, Lakewood, Arvada, Manhattan, Berkeley, Jefferson, Colorado."

The marriage listing for their son, William Lee Linney, says that he was born in 1893 in Topeka, Kansas. The marriage of William Lee Linney and Isabelle Mckelviewas on 17th June 1914 and was registered in Newton, Massachusetts.. Isabelle's father was Andrew Mckelvie and her mother, Ester Wright.

Leopold F. Linney arrived in Ellis Island, New York on 16th May 1918 on the ship "Algonquin" from Puerto lata, Dominican Republic.
Last Place of Residence: Brooklyn, Wisconsin.
Married. Age 56 years.
