Dora Leicester Finch was born in 1892. She was the third child of Lily and William. Her two older siblings were Lily and Edgar.
At the time of the 1911 census, Dora was nineteen and living with her family and working as a shop assistant at a Chemists. The Leceister Finch family were living at 30 Cromford Road, Wandsworth, London.
Family members recall that Dora worked in a jewellers in London.
When the family moved to Manchester in about 1915, Dora worked in the jewellery department at Kendal Milne (the same shop where her younger brother, Leslie, worked).

Dora married Frederick Exton Vipond (Fred) in 1920 who also lived on Barton Street, Manchester. They married in 1920 in Chorlton, Manchester.
Fred Vipond was born to Louisa Exton Cartwright and Harry Vipond. His father, Harry Vipond died in 1897. The 1901 census shows Louisa Exton Vipond (age 32) was widowed and worked as a mangageress of Clowes Hotel. Louisa was born in Manchester. Louisa and her son Hugh (age 6) lived at Clowes Hotel, 42 Trafford Road, Salford, Lancashire.
The 1901 census says that Frederick Exton Vipond (age 9) and his older brother, Frank Rowley Vipond (age 10), were attending The Manchester Warehousemen and Clerk's Orphan School.
Fred's mother, Louisa Vipond, remarried in about 1903/4 to Lancelot Tarr, who became Fred's step-father. Lancelot was about six years younger than Louisa.
It is interesting to note that Dora's younger brother, Lew, marrried Fred's step-sister, Ciss Tarr (Louie Priscilla Tarr). She was fourteen years younger than Fred.

At the time of the 1911 census, Fred Vipond was age nineteen and living at 145 Russell Street, Moss Side, Manchester with his mother and step-father (Louisa Exton Tarr and Lancelot Tarr), his older brother (Frank Rowley Vipond, age 20), his younger brother (Hugh Vipond, age 16) as well as his step-brother Lancelot Tarr known as Jack (age 3) and step-sister Louie Priscilla Tarr (age 5). Fred was an insurance clerk, his step-father was a baker's manager, Frank was an accountant's clerk and Hugh was a shipping clerk. Lousa had been married to Lancelot Tarr for 7 years

Dora and Fred didn't have any children. They did have nephews and neices.
Sadly, Fred's youngest brother, Lieutenant Hugh Vipond, died during World War I on 29th July 1917. He was in the 1st/6th Bn, Manchester Regiment and was age twenty-one. He is remembered with honour at the Achiet-le-Grand Communal Cemetry Extension. Achiet-le-Grand is a village 19 km south of Arras, France. It says he was the son of Mrs. L. E. Tarr of 44, Barton Street, Moss Side, Manchester.
Fred's older brother, Frank Rowley Vipond, married Gladys M Mansfield in 1918, Chorlton, Manchester. They had two children: John M Vipond born 1920, Chorlton, Manchester and Derek H Vipond born 1923, Chorlton, Manchester.
Dora lost her husband in 1943 when he was in his early 50's.
Dora used to go to Margaret and Les’ home to spend Christmas with them. Margaret’s sister, Betty, would be there too. Dora used to also visit Betty in Colwyn Bay where she lived.
Dora lived in the Manchester area. When she retired, Dora went to live in Alderley Edge to be near her long-time friend, Emm Ross.
Dora had a stroke and fell down the stairs in her home in Alderley Edge. She went into hospital and then a nursing home in Buxton, where she passed on 28th January 1974. |
